British singer Elton John returned to Mexico for his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour’ after a 14-year absence, a period of time that was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Preparations for the visit included free public screenings of his 1995 ‘Elton en Río’ concert in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Zapopan.

On October 2, Elton John performed the first of two scheduled farewell concerts at Estadio Banorte (formerly Estadio Azteca) in Mexico City. Accompanied by longtime musicians Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson, and Ray Cooper, the nearly 80-year-old artist performed a repertoire of over 24 songs, including ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Candle in the Wind’, ‘Bennie and the Jets’, ‘Tiny Dancer’, and ‘Your Song’.

Despite heavy rain during the set, the performance proceeded. While the event was considered a major cultural moment, some reports noted that the stadium did not reach full capacity. This appearance marked his first time at the venue in 34 years.
