American tennis player Emma Navarro has announced the early conclusion of her 2026 season to manage chronic health issues, including Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).

Navarro revealed she has been battling these conditions for approximately three years, with symptoms such as extreme fatigue, dizziness, headaches, cognitive difficulties, anxiety, and mood swings emerging around 2023. She noted that while her professional ranking reached a career-high of world number eight, her physical and mental well-being were declining due to autoimmune complications and inadequate energy intake. The severity of her exhaustion was significant enough to cause a breakdown during a Billie Jean King Cup match in late 2025.

By stepping away from the tour for the remainder of the year, including the Asian swing, Navarro aims to stabilize her medication and nutrition protocols through collaboration with medical specialists and nutritionists. Despite the health challenges, her recent season included a WTA 500 title in Strasbourg and a final appearance in Nottingham. 

Navarro expressed optimism regarding her recovery process, stating, “I gained some weight this year. But I also gained my life back.” She intends to return to professional competition at the start of the 2027 season in Australia.
