England midfielder Anthony Gordon has provided reflections on the team’s tactical identity and recent tournament experiences ahead of the UEFA Nations League.

Gordon described a 2026 World Cup victory against Mexico as “the greatest experience of my life,” noting that a red card for teammate Jarell Quansah forced the squad to adopt a more combative style of play. He stated that the 3-2 victory in Mexico City helped shape the team’s competitive identity under manager Thomas Tuchel, remarking that the team had to “fight tooth and nail to get the victory” rather than simply trying to play beautifully.

Regarding recent tactical shifts, Gordon urged the England national team to embrace its own identity rather than attempting to replicate Spain’s possession-based style. Now playing for Barcelona, Gordon emphasized that intricate passing is not part of the “English football DNA.” He argued that while England possesses high-quality players, they have different physical and direct qualities that should be utilized instead of mechanically adopting a foreign model to avoid becoming a “second Spain.”

Gordon also reflected on England’s recent World Cup campaign, where the team reached the semi-finals before losing 2-1 to Argentina. He expressed frustration regarding his substitution in that match, which saw the team shift to a more defensive formation, suggesting the defeat could serve as a lesson in finding a distinct identity for future tournaments.
