A report by the food charity Bite Back found widespread non-compliance with nutritional standards in English secondary schools. An analysis of 391 state schools indicated that three out of four menus breached established standards, with 53% offering prohibited high-fat, sugar, or salt products and 57% serving meat products more frequently than permitted.

In response to these findings and ongoing concerns regarding childhood obesity, the UK government announced a major overhaul of school food standards in England. The new regulations aim to restrict deep-fried foods, sugary desserts, and processed meats while mandating increases in fiber and wholegrains. To ensure compliance, schools must publish food policies and menus online. While the Association of School and College Leaders welcomed the improvements, they cautioned that enforcement should not become “another stick with which to beat head teachers.”
