Research and neurological discussions have highlighted the significant impact of environmental, lifestyle, and social factors on brain health and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

A large-scale study from Harvard Medical School involving nearly 500,000 individuals in the United Kingdom identified 193 different factors across various categories. Findings indicated that financial difficulties, lower education, poor housing, smoking, air pollution, and irregular sleep patterns are associated with increased risk, while regular exercise and social stability, such as living with a partner, are linked to lower risk. The study noted that while genetics play a role, hereditary risk remains relatively low for many.

Furthering this discussion at the 56th Congress of the Italian Society of Neurology, experts introduced the concept of the ‘exposome’—the sum of all biological, social, and cultural exposures throughout a lifetime. This concept suggests that environmental stimuli can interact with genetic profiles to create predispositions to neurological diseases. Specifically, research indicates that small particles from air pollutants may cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially triggering neuro-pathological processes such as chronic neuro-inflammation and oxidative stress.
