Romania continues its environmental cleanup initiatives through national movements and local conservation efforts. The Let’s Do It, Romania! association organized the 13th edition of National Cleanup Day on September 19, 2026, as part of a global movement. The event, officially recognized under Law 266/2024, mandates that the third Saturday of September be dedicated to these ecological actions.

Under the 2026 theme, “What do you leave behind?”, the campaign aimed to promote environmental responsibility regarding waste management, recycling, and separate collection. While initial registration numbers exceeded 130,000, participation reached over 300,000 people across the country. This initiative marks the 16th year of the movement, which has engaged nearly 3 million participants since its inception in 2010.

Local mobilizations were widespread. In Gorj, approximately 14,000 volunteers collected 15,500 bags of waste. In Botoșani, the effort included over 17,000 students and 1,900 teachers, alongside cross-border cooperation with partners in Moldova to clean the Prut river. Other activities included cleaning the Timiș riverbanks in Lugoj and forest areas in Nojorid. In Târgu-Neamț, forestry workers collected approximately 700 kilograms of waste.

Following the national event, Maramureș county reported a record number of participants, placing the region first in the country for volunteer mobilization across 35 registration points. In Ceamurlia de Jos, Tulcea county, community members mobilized to restore areas including the local cemetery, collecting plastic containers, vegetation, and artificial flowers for removal by tractor.

Despite high participation, organizers noted persistent challenges regarding construction waste, abandoned furniture, and litter in tourist zones. In the Bucharest-Ilfov region, waste management is supported by a partnership between ‘Let’s Do It, Romania!’ and Eco Sud, which covers the costs for sorting, treating, and disposing of collected waste at the Vidra Integrated Waste Management Center.
