In Lower Saxony, initiatives such as the ‘Schulwald Visionen Niedersachsen’ networking meeting aim to turn school forests into active learning sites for discussing climate and biodiversity. Additionally, primary school students in the Rotenburg (Wümme) region participated in the ‘Waldjugendspiele’ (Forest Youth Games), which utilized experiential learning to teach children about forestry, wildlife habitats, and forest fire prevention. Other secondary schools have expanded these efforts through projects like ‘Natürlich Erleben’ (Naturally Experience), focusing on teamwork and environmental responsibility. At Henfling-Gymnasium Meiningen, sustainability activities included upcycling, operating a ‘repair café,’ and conducting environmental research. During these research efforts, students reported high levels of pollution in the Werra river and collected waste, including tires and bumpers, from local forests. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-12: German schools host environmental and sustainability projects German secondary schools Herder-Gymnasium and Henfling-Gymnasium Meiningen held educational programs focused on nature, sustainability, and environmental conservation. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/german-schools-host-environmental-and-sustainability-projects ### 2026-09-30: Lower Saxony students engage in forest-based environmental education Students in Lower Saxony are engaging in forest-based educational programs to learn about biodiversity, climate, and sustainability through hands-on networking and nature games. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/lower-saxony-students-engage-in-forest-based-environmental-education --- Cite as: Environmental education initiatives in German schools.
