The automotive industry is navigating environmental and regulatory challenges regarding air conditioning refrigerants. Tightening European Union regulations on fluorinated greenhouse gases are aggressively reducing the market quota for R134a. Projections indicate the available quota will drop from 31 percent in 2024 to 17 percent in 2027 and just 9 percent by 2030, with a full phase-out planned by 2050.

The German automobile club ADAC has warned that this reduction could lead to increased maintenance costs, supply shortages, and difficulties in servicing older vehicles. While some services offer conversions to the newer R1234yf refrigerant, experts note that older systems are often not designed for it, and there is a lack of clear technical approvals and manufacturer certifications for such modifications.

Safety concerns have also emerged regarding unapproved DIY refill kits containing butane or propane sold online. These products are not designed for automotive air conditioning and pose a significant risk of fire or explosion. Additionally, studies in Poland indicate that many vehicles are already operating with insufficient refrigerant levels, which can lead to compressor damage.

While R1234yf has been adopted as an eco-friendly alternative to R134a due to lower global warming potential, it presents new environmental risks. When released into the atmosphere, R1234yf converts into trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a persistent ‘forever chemical’. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has identified TFA as a substance that may negatively impact human health, specifically regarding the thyroid, liver, and fertility. Estimates suggest annual TFA emissions could exceed 9,000 tons by 2036.
