European Union member states are progressively implementing mandatory electronic invoicing and e-reporting regulations as part of the VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) reform.

France initiated this transition on September 1, 2026, requiring all VAT-subject companies to be capable of receiving electronic invoices. Large and intermediate-sized enterprises must also issue invoices in a structured, machine-readable format. Small and medium-sized enterprises have until September 1, 2027, to meet issuance requirements.

Other member states are preparing for similar mandates. Germany and Slovakia are scheduled to require structured e-invoices for B2B companies starting January 1, 2027. Experts note that businesses must integrate specific data formats, such as XRechnung or ZUGFeRD, to ensure technical compliance and avoid issues with tax deductions.
