The European Commission is considering stricter regulations regarding pesticide residues in imported food products. A study by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) suggests the proposal aims to reduce the Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) of certain hazardous pesticides to a ‘technical zero’ for imports, matching standards already required of EU farmers.

While the policy is intended to improve food safety and create a level playing field for European producers, it may cause significant economic disruptions. Projections indicate that if international producers, particularly in Africa, the Americas, and Brazil, fail to adapt, agricultural imports to the EU could drop by 41%.

Such a reduction could lead to substantial consumer price hikes. In a worst-case scenario, coffee prices could increase by as much as 332 percent and citrus fruits by over 80 percent. Additionally, the shift may increase costs for livestock farmers due to rising animal feed prices. The proposed changes could affect 235 products from 86 different countries, with specific sectors like Moroccan tomato exports facing significant declines.
