Eurostat provisional data show that renewable sources supplied just under half of the EU’s gross electricity consumption in 2025, reaching 49.9% and marking a 2.4‑point increase from the previous year. The share of renewables in total final energy consumption also rose to 26.2% in 2025, still short of the bloc’s 2030 target.

In the first half of 2026, solar photovoltaic generation accelerated further. Solar power accounted for more than 20% of EU electricity demand in May, June and July, with the average share climbing from 18% a year earlier to 21.5% in July. Latvia set a record with solar covering 49% of its electricity demand in June, while Germany sustained a solar share above 30% for three consecutive months. Switzerland and Austria also posted new solar‑share highs.

Together, the data illustrate a rapid expansion of renewable electricity, especially solar, across the EU as member states move toward higher renewable targets.
