A coalition of European companies, including Nextcloud, IONOS, and Open-Xchange, is developing Euro-Office, an open-source productivity suite designed to provide a European alternative to Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. The project aims to enhance digital and data sovereignty by reducing reliance on non-European software providers. Initially described as a development effort to move beyond browser-based use, the project has progressed to the launch of Nextcloud Hub 26 Summer. This release introduces a new Euro-Office desktop application that supports Linux, macOS, and Windows (including AMD64 and ARM64 architectures). Utilizing the OnlyOffice codebase under the AGPLv3 license, the application allows for local editing of documents, spreadsheets, and presentations while maintaining compatibility with OOXML and OpenDocument Formats (ODF). The software facilitates offline editing and local file management with secure synchronization to Nextcloud instances. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-18: Euro-Office develops desktop application to rival Microsoft Office Euro-Office is developing a desktop application for Windows, Linux, and macOS to provide an open-source, European alternative to Microsoft Office, focusing on data sovereignty and offline capabilities. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/euro-office-develops-desktop-application-to-rival-microsoft-office ### 2026-09-16: Nextcloud launches Euro-Office desktop app for open-source productivity Nextcloud has released Hub 26 Summer, introducing a desktop application for Euro-Office to provide a sovereign, open-source alternative to Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nextcloud-launches-desktop-app-for-euro-office-productivity-suite --- Cite as: Euro-Office open-source productivity development.
