Reports indicate significant disparities in access to innovative medicines across various European nations.

In Denmark, the pharmaceutical industry association Lif launched a campaign titled ‘Do you get the best medicine?’ to highlight gaps in treatment availability. Lif reported that Denmark has access to only 55 percent of new innovative medicines approved in the EU. Within oncology, while 67 percent of new cancer medicines are available, only 32 percent are recommended as standard treatment. The association noted that the Danish Medicines Council rejected 29 percent of all new medicines this year, with rejection rates for rare diseases reaching approximately 69 percent.

In Serbia, a study by the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) found that patients have access to less than 10 percent of innovative medicines registered in the EU over the last four years. This places Serbia at the bottom of the European scale. Approximately 200,000 patients are estimated to be waiting for modern therapies, as 42 medicines covering 82 indications await inclusion on the official drug list. Experts suggest that Serbia’s per capita investment in medicines is roughly half that of Croatia.
