European airports continue to face operational disruptions linked to the implementation of the Entry-Exit-System (EES) at Schengen borders. The requirement for third-country nationals to provide biometric data has caused significant passenger queues and flight delays, with travelers in Greece reporting waits of several hours.

In response, Swiss International Air Lines has increased its minimum transfer time from 40 to 50 minutes, while Swiss hubs like Zurich and Euroairport Basel are deploying additional staff. Concerns persist regarding the autumn period as the transitional regulation allowing border authorities to suspend biometric registrations is scheduled to expire in September. The Swiss State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) is coordinating with other Schengen states to request an extension.

Recent Eurocontrol evaluations of departure punctuality at Europe’s 30 busiest airports highlight significant performance variations. Zurich Airport ranked 27th with a 60% punctuality rate, placing it alongside Tel Aviv. While this is a 3% improvement over 2024, it remains significantly lower than Northern European hubs such as Stockholm-Arlanda (85%), Oslo (84%), and Copenhagen (82%). Other high performers include Istanbul at 81%. Conversely, Lisbon reported a 49% punctuality rate, while Nice stood at 58%. Notable improvements were noted at Munich, which rose to 71%, and London-Heathrow, which saw a ten-percentage-point increase.
