On September 25, two separate incidents occurred in Spain. A Delta Airlines flight bound for Atlanta returned to Barcelona-El Prat Airport after smoke and flames were seen in an engine, prompting the activation of the AEROCAT emergency plan. Additionally, a Swiss Air Airbus A320 performing a flight from Zurich made an emergency landing at Manises Airport in Valencia, causing temporary runway blockages and the diversion of five other arriving flights.

On September 26 and 27, a Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-300 traveling from Barcelona to Boston was forced to make an emergency landing at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, Portugal, after smoke was detected in the cabin. While authorities confirmed that ‘no fire occurred on the aircraft’, Delta described the incident as a mechanical issue. 

The diversion involved more than 60 firefighters and caused temporary suspensions of flight operations in Porto. Of the 296 passengers, reports on those requiring medical assistance vary; some sources indicate 14 passengers were treated, while others report 8 were treated on the tarmac and 3 to 4 were taken to Hospital de São João for stable, mild respiratory symptoms due to smoke inhalation. Passengers were scheduled to continue to Boston the following day.
