Developments: 2. Bedbug infestations are increasing across Europe, driven by heightened global travel and the development of resistance to common insecticides. In the United Kingdom, monitoring firms report annual increases of 20 to 25 percent in major cities. The issue has expanded from residential areas into commercial sectors, affecting offices and public transport services in London. In France, health agency Anses estimated that roughly 11 percent of households experienced infestations between 2017 and 2022. Experts note that while these pests do not transmit known diseases, they cause significant psychological and physical distress. Because bedbugs do not fly or jump, they spread primarily by hitchhiking on luggage, clothing, and furniture through public spaces such as metros, trains, and cinemas. Traditional DIY chemical treatments are increasingly ineffective as the insects develop resistance to pyrethroid insecticides, often allowing them to retreat deeper into furniture and structural cracks. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-19: Bed bugs pose rising household risks due to travel and resistance Experts warn of rising bed bug infestations driven by increased travel and insecticide resistance, noting that improper cleaning can spread the pests throughout homes. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/bed-bugs-pose-rising-household-risks-due-to-travel-and-resistance ### 2026-10-12: Bedbug infestations surge across UK as pests develop pesticide resistance Bedbug infestations are surging across the UK, with pests developing resistance to common pesticides.
