Sources: 4. Developments: 2. Climate change adaptation strategies are being prioritized across Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on forestry and agriculture. In Austria, forestry experts have emphasized the need for long-term strategies to address tree species survival, invasive pests, and ash dieback. To maintain economic stability, experts suggest transitioning toward mixed forest compositions, particularly in lower and middle altitudes. In Hungary, new research suggests that carbon pricing incentives could influence timber harvesting. The FOX (Forest Carbon Sink Optimisation) model indicates that assigning financial value to stored carbon could reduce the costs of Hungary’s transition to climate neutrality by approximately 3.1 billion euros by 2050. Simultaneously, in Romania’s Szeklerland region, agricultural stakeholders are addressing climate-driven droughts. Proposed adaptations include improving water management, adopting irrigation technologies, and utilizing drought-resistant hybrid seeds to ensure long-term agricultural viability. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-29: Climate adaptation strategies focus on carbon pricing and water management Climate adaptation efforts focus on carbon pricing for Hungarian forests to reduce transition costs and improving water management for farmers in Szeklerland, Romania, to combat drought. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/climate-adaptation-strategies-focus-on-carbon-pricing-and-water-management ### 2026-09-05: Forestry experts call for climate adaptation strategies Forestry experts in Carinthia are calling for long-term adaptation strategies to combat climate change and protect the region's 2.9 billion euro forest-related economy. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/forestry-experts-call-for-climate-adaptation-strategies --- Cite as: European climate change adaptation strategies.
