Community-led repair café initiatives in France and Switzerland are promoting sustainability by encouraging citizens to fix household items rather than discarding them.

In the Pays de Ribeauvillé region of Alsace, the Repair café des Trois-Châteaux operates as a bi-monthly initiative across 16 localities. Since 2015, the project has diverted several tons of waste from landfills by facilitating mutual aid and shared learning, where participants engage directly in the repair process.

Similarly, the Repair Café Region Sursee in Switzerland operates out of Kulturwerk 118 to combat a “throwaway society.” Volunteers assist with repairs for electronics, textiles, and mechanical devices, such as sewing machine components and kitchen appliances. The organization relies on volunteer expertise and donations to sustain its operations.
