European energy markets have undergone a significant shift in dependency following the damage to the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022. While the European Union has reduced its reliance on Russian gas, new dependencies have emerged. Norway has become the primary supplier, accounting for over 50 percent of pipeline gas imports, followed by Algeria. In the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market, the United States holds a dominant position with more than 63 percent of the market share.

In response to these shifts and the abandonment of Russian gas, some European nations have adjusted their energy strategies. Germany and the Netherlands have restarted coal power plants, while Romania secured an agreement to delay the closure of its coal-fired thermal plants until 2029.

Russian officials have criticized these transitions, with Special Representative for Climate Affairs Sergei Kononotchenko stating that the abandonment of Nord Stream and the closure of nuclear plants has forced Europe to rely on wood for heating. He characterized these measures as a combination of attempts to punish Russia and a forced acceleration toward green economy standards.
