In Belgium, recent discussions at Film Fest Gent have focused on the changing nature of film criticism due to the rise of social media platforms like TikTok and Letterboxd. While these platforms have democratized reviewing, there are concerns regarding the potential loss of nuanced analysis in favor of algorithmic engagement. Concurrently, youth-oriented festivals such as Filem’On and FilemKING are empowering younger audiences by involving children and teenagers as jury members and providing platforms for them to produce their own films. Expanding into thematic documentary cinema, the ACTION! Festival in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, is set to explore ecological, economic, and social transitions. Similarly, the Alimenterre Festival in France will focus on sustainable and solidarity-based food systems, featuring documentaries that examine the impacts of industrial agriculture on water cycles and insect populations. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-22: Film festivals in Belgium and France focus on sustainability Film festivals in Belgium and France will showcase documentaries on ecological transition and sustainable food systems in November 2026. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/film-festivals-in-belgium-and-france-focus-on-sustainability ### 2026-10-12: Film festivals in Belgium explore the future of criticism and youth engagement Belgian film festivals are addressing the changing nature of film criticism and empowering young audiences through youth-led juries at Filem’On and FilemKING. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/film-festivals-in-belgium-explore-the-future-of-criticism-and-youth-engagement --- Cite as: European film festivals exploring social and cultural themes.
