Various German municipalities are preparing for European Mobility Week, scheduled from September 16 to 22, 2026. The initiative, organized by the European Commission, focuses on promoting climate-friendly transport alternatives and innovative mobility concepts under the theme ‘Mobility across Generations’.

In the Westfalen-Lippe and Hameln-Pyrmont regions, planned activities include transport transition conferences, bicycle tours, and lectures. To encourage public transit use, certain areas are offering free bus rides or single tickets for buses and trains. In the Münsterland area, specific vouchers via the BuBiM app are being utilized for transit access.

In Jena and Schweinfurt, the program includes infrastructure tours, such as visits to the Paradiesbahnhof construction site, and interactive mobility training. Schweinfurt’s participation features the theme ‘Mix & Move – In Schweinfurt klimafreundlich mobil’, which includes bicycle excursions, documentary screenings, and exhibitions regarding sustainable mobility.

Additional participation has been confirmed in Bremerhaven and Viersen. In Bremerhaven, local police will host a free, three-hour training session for pedelecs on September 18 to improve riding techniques and hazard identification. Viersen is focusing on school zone safety through temporary ‘school streets’ and designated ‘drop-off zones’.

Leipzig has opened the week at Nathanaelkirche, highlighting the Nathanaelkirchplatz initiative. The project demonstrated transforming the square into a social meeting point using seating and flower boxes. Current plans aim to reduce through-traffic and introduce new trees to improve the microclimate, seeking to foster dialogue between citizens and municipal offices.
