Research from the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) indicates a growing tension between the European public’s desire for integration and their confidence in the European Union’s ability to deliver it.

Initial findings from a study titled ‘Future nostalgia: Europe’s unfinished song’ showed that while 75% of respondents desire greater integration, 68% perceive a deterioration of the European project, and 56% believe the future of a closer Union is in danger. The study noted a significant collapse in trust toward political leaders, with 75% of respondents believing the EU is not adequately addressing major challenges such as the war in Ukraine and economic difficulties.

Subsequent data from a larger survey of nearly 6,000 respondents across several nations reinforced these trends. While 75% still envision a more integrated Europe in 20 years, 74% feel the continent is currently handling challenges poorly. The research highlighted regional variations, such as 80% of respondents in France holding a pessimistic view of Europe’s future, and noted that slow institutional responses in Germany and the Netherlands contribute to declining confidence.
