Developments: 2. European advancements in quantum technology have progressed from specialized software applications to large-scale hardware and ecosystem initiatives. In Italy, the Italian Quantum Emulation Center announced the development of quantum emulation software designed to run on traditional computers. This technology enables high-speed parallelized operations, which scientific director Marco Armoni demonstrated through a ballistic attack simulation that processed 16 million scenarios in 87 milliseconds to identify optimal defense protocols. Broadening the scope of European research, major initiatives have been launched to advance both hardware and software infrastructure. The NFQC-1k project, a €122 million effort led by QUDORA, aims to develop a fault-tolerant quantum computer using trapped-ion technology to achieve at least 1,000 physical qubits. Simultaneously, the EU-funded Q-VERSE project is working to create a hardware-agnostic software stack, described by researchers as a ‘Linux for quantum computers,’ to establish a unified programming ecosystem across different architectures. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-28: European researchers launch major quantum computing hardware and software initiatives European initiatives are advancing quantum technology through the €122M NFQC-1k project to build a 1,000-qubit computer and the Q-VERSE project to develop a unified, hardware-agnostic software stack. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/european-researchers-launch-major-quantum-computing-hardware-and-software-initiatives ### 2026-09-18: Italian Quantum Emulation Center develops defense software The Italian Quantum Emulation Center has developed software that emulates quantum technology on traditional computers to rapidly process complex cybersecurity and ballistic defense scenarios. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/italian-quantum-emulation-center-develops-defense-software --- Cite as: European quantum computing development.
