Eurostat data from 2024 indicates significant imbalances in tourism density across various European regions. The Canary Islands, Catalonia, and the Croatian Adriatic coast represent the highest absolute volumes of overnight stays. 

Specific regions show extreme tourism intensity relative to local populations. The South Aegean region, including islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Rhodes, recorded the highest ratio with approximately 127 overnight stays per inhabitant. This figure is nearly 19 times higher than the EU average. The South Aegean also exhibits a spatial density of roughly 6,950 overnight stays per square kilometer, which is ten times the European average. 

The Ionian Islands follow with approximately 103 overnight stays per resident. Other notable areas with high density include South Tyrol in Italy and the Croatian Adriatic coast, while regions like Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany report much lower ratios.
