Actress Evangeline Lilly has shared details regarding her decision to step away from Hollywood, noting that she officially retired from acting in 2020. Although she did not publicly announce the decision until 2024, she has been effectively retired for several years.

Lilly stated that her departure was driven by a desire for a quieter life, remarking that she has ‘always hated being famous’ and viewed fame as the ‘cost of the wealth’ associated with her career. She admitted to experiencing ‘gripping fear’ regarding the potential loss of influence, power, and income when she initially walked away from the spotlight.

Drawing on her background in political science and international relations, Lilly expressed a preference for making a ‘hands-on impact’ on the world. She highlighted her 22 years of humanitarian work in Rwanda and indicated a desire to focus on projects involving healing and spiritual development, such as telling stories from behind the camera.

In a recent interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), Lilly further clarified that the transition away from the industry helped alleviate ‘massive chronic health issues’ that were caused by the stress and physical demands of her profession. She attributed her decision to her Christian faith, expressing that it was liberating to trust in a divine plan rather than building a life around power and wealth. She expressed a continued interest in creating her own stories through writing and other creative forms rather than appearing in front of the camera.
