Following a September 2025 shooting at Evergreen High School in Colorado, where a 16-year-old student wounded two peers before taking his own life, the school has implemented a therapy dog program to assist in trauma recovery.

Through the nonprofit Canine Companions, two golden Labradors named Norene and Polenta have been provided free of charge to visit classrooms and hallways. The initiative aims to help students and staff manage stress and maintain focus. In response to the program’s impact, School Principal Skyler Artes, who sheltered with students during the attack, has decided to train as a support dog handler.
