The history of German Plattenbau, or prefabricated concrete housing, spans a century, beginning with the Splanemann settlement in Berlin in 1926. The technology expanded across both East and West Germany, with the former East Germany implementing a massive housing programme in 1973 to construct 3 million apartments using the WBS 70 design.

While these developments were once viewed as modern and affordable, many districts—including Berlin-Marzahn, Halle-Neustadt, Leipzig-Grünau, Munich-Neuperlach, and Cologne-Chorweiler—have since become associated with poverty and crime following German reunification. 

However, a modern re-evaluation of these structures is underway. Some architects and residents are finding value in the compact layouts and horizontal urban breadth of these post-war typologies. Current renovation efforts are increasingly focused on stripping back old plaster and wallpaper to modernize the original building substance. 

In a specific redevelopment proposal, architect Jurek Brüggen aims to transform traditional East German WBS 70 structures into individual single-family homes. Inspired by the landscape in Stendal, Saxony-Anhalt, this project seeks to convert large structures into separate living units with private entrances and gardens, providing modern housing alternatives without utilizing greenfield sites.
