Research published in journals including PNAS and ‘SLEEP’ indicates that short bursts of physical activity or napping can mitigate the negative effects of sleep deprivation on memory retention.

One study involving healthy adults after 30 hours of wakefulness found that 20 minutes of moderate-to-high intensity indoor cycling provided memory benefits nearly identical to a 90-minute nap. Participants in both the exercise and nap groups remembered approximately 22 percent more information than a control group. 

Researchers noted distinct neurological differences between the two methods: napping helps the brain recover to better receive new information and alleviates fatigue, whereas exercise helps the brain use remaining resources more efficiently without reducing perceived tiredness. 

Newer findings suggest that 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as stationary cycling, performed before sleep may protect memory performance even when sleep duration is limited. Researchers have indicated that deep sleep, or slow-wave sleep, may play a role in this memory consolidation benefit. 

Expanding on the broader implications of sleep, a study published in Communications Medicine involving 704 women in the United States identified associations between changes in sleep patterns and increased mortality risk, including cardiovascular mortality. Researchers observed three primary patterns: a stable group, a group showing nocturnal sleep deterioration with increased daytime sleep, and a group experiencing increased sleep both day and night. While the study does not prove direct causality, these shifts may serve as early indicators of declining health. Experts continue to emphasize that neither exercise nor napping is a permanent replacement for regular nighttime sleep.
