Severe weather events across Canada have caused significant economic damage through the summer of 2026. Initially, thunderstorms in Ontario and Quebec between late June and early July resulted in approximately $439 million in insured damages. These storms brought wind, hail, and torrential rain, with Ottawa recording record-breaking rainfall of 118 millimetres on July 1, leading to over 4,500 flooded basements.

As the season progressed, the scale of insured losses expanded significantly. In the Canadian Prairies, ten major weather events caused over $1.8 billion in insured losses, driven primarily by heavy rain and flooding. Edmonton, Alberta, saw over $80 million in losses due to record rainfall, while Saskatchewan and Manitoba experienced more than $900 million in claims during a single two-day period in June due to tornadoes and flash flooding.

In eastern Canada, flooding in the Montreal area reached an estimated CAD 442 million in losses. Throughout Ontario and Quebec, six major catastrophes resulted in more than 30,000 personal property claims, often involving pluvial flash flooding and sewer backups. In response to these increasing risks, the Insurance Bureau of Canada has called for government intervention and increased investment in infrastructure and flood prevention.
