Two separate incidents involving Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-15 fighter jets have caused runway closures and flight disruptions at Naha Airport in Okinawa.

On August 18, an F-15 returning from a scramble mission experienced a landing gear failure. The aircraft landed with a broken left main landing gear, causing it to tilt and touch its wing to the ground. The incident resulted in a four-hour closure of Runway B and affected at least 128 domestic and international flights. Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki described the event as ‘gravely disappointing’.

A second incident occurred on the night of September 10, when an F-15 from Naha Base made an emergency landing due to a hydraulic system malfunction. During the landing, sparks were observed from the rear of the aircraft. The jet became immobilized on the second runway, causing an oil leak and a one-hour closure that delayed 15 arriving flights. No injuries were reported in either incident.
