The delivery of F-16 Block 70 fighter jets to Bulgaria has faced significant setbacks. In mid-August 2026, Bulgaria was informed that the second batch of eight aircraft would be delayed until at least the second quarter of 2030 due to production difficulties. While Lockheed Martin reported that Block 70/72 deliveries resumed following a technical redesign, U.S. officials stated they are working to accelerate the process.

To maintain air defense and NATO commitments, Bulgaria must rely on its Soviet-era MiG-29 fleet until 2029–2030. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov noted this is contingent on securing spare parts, leading Bulgaria to reach out to Poland and Hungary for components. Previous attempts to acquire used Gripen or F-16 jets from Sweden and the United States were unsuccessful. Consequently, the government is now exploring combat aircraft acquisition through operational leasing to bridge the capability gap.

Regarding the initial eight F-16 Block 70 aircraft, Major General Nikolay Rusev reported they have accumulated approximately 700 flight hours. However, these jets are not yet fully equipped for combat duty, as the installation of self-protection and warning systems is not expected to begin for another year. Pilot training is progressing, with eight pilots currently trained; Rusev expects this number to reach 11 by the end of 2026 and 15 by April 2027, with a long-term goal of training 32 pilots for the 16 total aircraft.
