Diomede Barchiesi, a 50-year-old man from Lanciano, died following an assault on the Fossacesia seafront in the province of Chieti. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 9-10 when Barchiesi intervened to protect his 18-year-old son during a confrontation with other youths. Barchiesi was struck in the jaw, causing a heavy fall and a severe traumatic brain injury. After undergoing neurosurgery at Pescara Hospital and being diagnosed with brain death, his passing was officially certified.

Following his death, Barchiesi’s organs were donated to hospitals in Bergamo, L’Aquila, and Pisa in accordance with his prior wishes. The incident led to local mourning in the Abruzzo region, prompting the Mayor of Fossacesia to suspend local musical and entertainment activities.
