On August 7, 2026, a frontal collision between two buses near Doukou Doukou, approximately 55 kilometers from Madaoua in southern Niger, resulted in at least 22 deaths and 37 injuries. The casualties included 17 soldiers who were in the final stages of military training, though some reports suggested military fatalities could reach 42.

Following the accident, Niger’s Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Colonel-Major Abdouramane Amadou, met with officials from the transport companies STM and SONITRAV. The Minister addressed the companies regarding their responsibilities and noted that human behavior is a primary cause of road accidents. 

Authorities stated that depending on the results of the investigation, the involved companies could face sanctions including official warnings, suspension of activities, or the total withdrawal of operating licenses. Legal proceedings may also be pursued.
