The driver, the children’s 45-year-old father, is under investigation for road homicide and causing very serious personal injury. While toxicology tests were negative, investigators are examining whether driver distraction, a medical emergency, or falling asleep at the wheel caused the vehicle to strike a plane tree. The mother of the children stated that the girls were secured in car seats and sleeping at the time of the crash, suggesting the father may have suffered a medical episode. The 4-year-old victim remains in a stable but extremely critical coma at Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Udine.
