A 20-year-old medical student was arrested following a fatal accident on Avenida Beira Rio in Cuiabá. The incident involved the student’s vehicle striking a motorcyclist before colliding with an elderly pedestrian, identified as Valdemir Ernesto dos Santos (also referred to as Valdemir de Souza), who was crossing the street with a cane. The victim died while being transported to the hospital by the Emergency Mobile Care Service (Samu).

Initial reports indicated that a breathalyzer test showed an alcohol level of 0.51 mg/L, exceeding the legal limit of 0.34 mg/L. In subsequent testimony to the Civil Police, the student claimed he was distracted by his vehicle’s dashboard after passing a speed bump, which caused him to miss the motorcyclist and the pedestrian. While the student attempted to provide aid, he was arrested in flagrante and later released after paying R$ 25,000 in bail. The Specialized Traffic Crimes Police (Deletran) is continuing the investigation.
