On September 21, 14-year-old Malakai Adams was shot and killed in the Edgemere neighborhood of Queens while riding a scooter near Beach Channel Drive. Initial NYPD investigations considered the incident a possible targeted killing or a botched scooter robbery, noting the suspect fled the scene using the victim’s scooter.

By October 13, a 17-year-old defendant was charged with second-degree murder and weapon possession. Prosecutors characterized the shooting as a “targeted, execution-style attack” potentially motivated by an online dispute between the teenagers rather than a robbery. The suspect, described as a Crips gang associate, was apprehended at his home. If convicted, the defendant faces a sentence of up to 25 years to life in prison.
