In Plateau State, mining activities have been marked by fatal incidents involving miners. On September 24, four miners—two men and two women—died when an excavation site suddenly caved in during tin mining in the Baban Rafi area of Bokkos Local Government Area.

Two days later, the nature of the danger shifted from industrial accidents to targeted violence. In Marit village, located in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, gunmen attacked a mining site, killing at least five miners and injuring two others. Rwang Tengwong of the Berom Youth Moulders Association described the attack as a “very sad and painful development” and called for increased security.

On September 26, violence escalated into a series of coordinated attacks across the state. In Lajam Marit village, gunmen on motorcycles killed at least six people and injured two others. Separate attacks in the Rakum community resulted in the deaths of three women and left one person wounded. Further raids in Mangu and Bokkos claimed at least 11 lives and involved the destruction of homes, churches, food barns, and farmlands.

On September 28, gunmen attacked a mining site in the Rakum community of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area during the afternoon, killing three women and injuring one person. This attack occurred despite a state government ban requiring mining operations to cease by 5:00 pm and a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, and Mangu. The timing of the incident has raised concerns regarding the efficacy of current security strategies.

Security forces, including troops from Operation Enduring Peace, have intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations to identify the perpetrators, though no group has officially claimed responsibility for the wave of attacks.
