Authorities in Cassano Magnago, Varese, have transitioned an investigation into a fatal head-on collision from a potential road accident to a femicide case. The incident involved 73-year-old Fulvio Ielmini, who allegedly drove his Jaguar into the opposing lane, striking the vehicle of 69-year-old Pierina Buffon.

Initial inquiries considered whether a medical emergency caused the lane departure, but investigators now believe the crash was intentional. The victim’s family reported a history of stalking and harassment, noting that a formal complaint regarding Ielmini’s ‘persecutory behavior’ had been filed in July following the end of their eight-year relationship in June. The victim’s son reportedly possesses video evidence of Ielmini following and waiting for Buffon.

Prosecutors in Busto Arsizio have charged Ielmini with femicide and aggravated voluntary homicide, alleging the crime was motivated by futile motives. During the collision on the Cassano Magnago bypass, Ielmini’s vehicle reportedly reached speeds of approximately 140 km/h.

Following a custody order from the Busto Arsizio Court, the Carabinieri arrested Ielmini on October 26. While he previously remained hospitalized in Varese under police guard due to leg injuries sustained in the crash, he is now being held in the infirmary of the Busto Arsizio prison.

On October 27, the community gathered at the Santa Maria del Cerro church for funeral services for Buffon. During the ceremony, Parish Priest Don Andrea Ferrarotti addressed the tragedy, stating that the sanctity of life must be protected and noting that the community is seeking justice through a difficult legal process.
