The 26th edition of the Festival Verdi commenced at the Teatro Regio di Parma with a production of Giuseppe Verdi’s rare opera ‘Alzira’. Directed by James Conlon and conducted by the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, the opening production utilized a symbolic staging by Manuel Renga that moved away from direct historical references to the Inca world.

As the festival progressed, the production of ‘Alzira’ was noted for its emphasis on political dimensions, specifically the conquest of Peru as a process of territorial and cultural appropriation. The festival also featured a concert performance of the Verdi Requiem at the Teatro Regio, conducted by Daniele Rustioni and accompanied by the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini and the Teatro Regio chorus.
