Sources: 3. Developments: 2. As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, concerns have grown regarding the integrity of the tournament due to the rapid expansion of the global sports wagering industry. The upcoming event, hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, will feature an expanded format of 48 teams and 104 matches. While the tournament structure of 12 groups of four teams is intended to reduce tactical collusion risks, the increased volume of matches creates hundreds of additional betting markets. Integrity specialists have warned that manipulation often targets micro-bets and live in-play wagering rather than just final scores. The rise of offshore operators and cryptocurrencies is also noted as a factor that complicates monitoring efforts. In response, FIFA has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding football through strict regulations and enhanced integrity monitoring. The organization is utilizing a Code of Ethics and increasing cooperation with international law enforcement, betting operators, and sports integrity organizations to combat match manipulation, insider betting, and corruption. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-24: 2026 FIFA World Cup faces integrity risks from expanded betting markets The expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring 104 matches across North America, faces increased match-fixing risks due to the growth of complex global betting markets. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/2026-fifa-world-cup-faces-integrity-risks-from-expanded-betting-markets ### 2026-10-23: FIFA strengthens betting regulations to protect football integrity Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, FIFA is implementing stricter betting regulations and enhanced monitoring to combat match manipulation and protect football's global integrity. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/fifa-strengthens-betting-regulations-to-protect-football-integrity --- Cite as: FIFA World Cup 2026 betting integrity concerns.
