The German startup Focused Energy is working to develop laser fusion technology for industrial use, aiming to launch its first commercial power plant within 15 years. Ulrich Sigel, Vice President of Focused Energy, has stated that fusion is essential for global decarbonization in sectors such as transport and aviation, as renewable energy alone may not meet rising demand.

While the technology aims to scale successful high-power laser experiments seen in the United States, some experts, such as Professor Sven Linow, have expressed skepticism regarding heavy investment in unproven technology. 

Following these initial goals, the company announced plans to build the world’s first commercial laser fusion plant at the site of the decommissioned Biblis nuclear fission plant in Germany. To support this, Focused Energy secured $240 million in its initial funding round, which is cited as the largest first-round financing in the history of the global fusion industry. The energy company RWE has also invested 60 million euros into the project. The company’s timeline includes launching a laser fusion demonstrator within five years and a pilot plant within ten years, with the final facility potentially producing nearly 1 gigawatt of electricity.
