The city of Foggia has initiated a candidacy to become a ‘European City of Sport’ for 2028. To support this bid, the local sports department has organized preparatory events, including meetings with sports associations and a ceremony titled ‘ECCELLENZE DELLO SPORT 2026’ to recognize local athletes.

This initiative has faced political opposition from the local Fratelli d’Italia party. The group has criticized the candidacy, noting that the title is granted by private non-profit organizations, ACES Europe and ACES Italia, rather than being an official European Union designation. The party is demanding transparency regarding public expenditures related to the bid and has argued that funds should instead be prioritized for maintaining sports facilities and supporting young athletes.
