Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) was confirmed in kudu at Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape after wildlife health surveillance identified an increase in lameness among the population. While initial tests were negative, subsequent diagnostic testing confirmed the presence of the contagious virus. In response, South African National Parks (SANParks) and the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture have implemented strengthened biosecurity measures and increased monitoring. Tourism operations at Addo Elephant National Park remain open under disease-management precautions. Parallel efforts to manage the disease are occurring in Limpopo province, where the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is conducting vaccination campaigns. In villages near Kruger National Park, such as Maphophe, technicians are administering FMD booster shots and tick dipping treatments to cattle belonging to small-scale farmers. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-16: South Africa manages foot-and-mouth disease in wildlife and livestock Foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in kudu at Addo Elephant National Park, prompting increased biosecurity, while vaccination efforts continue for livestock in Limpopo province. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/south-africa-manages-foot-and-mouth-disease-in-wildlife-and-livestock ### 2026-10-14: Foot-and-mouth disease confirmed in kudu at Addo Elephant National Park Foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in kudu at South Africa's Addo Elephant National Park following reports of increased lameness in the animals. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/foot-and-mouth-disease-confirmed-in-kudu-at-addo-elephant-national-park --- Cite as: Foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in South Africa.
