Turkey and France have entered a period of increased military contact following the signing of a Defense Cooperation Roadmap on October 3, 2026. This roadmap establishes a framework for regular, result-oriented tactical contacts and strategic dialogue between the two NATO members.

While the agreement is not a specific contract for weapons sales or technology transfers, it follows discussions regarding Turkey’s interest in French-Italian defense systems, such as the SAMP/T anti-aircraft system and Meteor long-range air-to-air missiles, to support its domestic Steel Dome air defense program.

Building on this diplomatic framework, the two nations conducted joint naval exercises involving the Turkish frigate TCG Gökova (F-496) and the French Navy frigate FS Surcouf. The exercises took place after the French vessel visited the port of Marmaris, marking a practical application of the ongoing maritime cooperation between the two countries.
