The Kunstsammlung NRW (K20) in Düsseldorf is hosting a major exhibition of expressionist artist Franz Marc, titled ‘Auf der Suche nach einer besseren Welt’ (In Search of a Better World). Opening on September 12, the showcase features more than 120 paintings and works on paper, marking the first large-scale exhibition dedicated to Marc in Germany in approximately 20 years.

The collection includes masterpieces on loan from international institutions, such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and museums in Madrid and Chicago, alongside German and private collections. The works trace Marc’s stylistic evolution from late-impressionist color palettes and iconic animal imagery to cubist-inspired abstraction. 

Marc, a co-founder of the ‘Der Blaue Reiter’ movement, produced a relatively small body of work between 1904 and 1914 before his death in 1916 during the Battle of Verdun.
