Recent court rulings in Vietnam have resulted in life imprisonment sentences for individuals involved in significant financial fraud schemes.

In Ho Chi Minh City, Cao Van Dat, a former construction company director, was sentenced for fraud and misappropriation of assets. Between late 2020 and early 2021, Dat falsely claimed ownership of land plots in the Binh Thanh district, deceiving acquaintances into transferring 40 billion VND under the promise of completing land use certificates.

In a separate case in Hanoi, Phạm Thanh Hải, former Chairman of IDT International Technology Development and Investment JSC, received a life sentence for a large-scale investment scam. Using his website and various seminars, Hải posed as an experienced investor to lure 574 victims into high-profit projects, such as a purported macadamia industrial tree investment. The scheme caused a total loss of 576 billion VND, resulting in what the court described as “severe economic hardship and exhaustion” for many individuals.
