# Fraunhofer ISE battery electrode technology development

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) have developed a new battery electrode design aimed at increasing energy density by 10% to 15% without adding weight. This is achieved by increasing electrode coating thickness from the standard 100–200 µm to as much as 800 µm, which reduces the number of required current collectors and allows for more active energy-storing material.

The method is described as PFAS-free and solvent-free, and has been successfully demonstrated in lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and zinc-ion cells. Prototypes for lithium-ion pouch cells have been produced under conditions approximating industrial manufacturing.
