In July 2026 the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) announced two linked developments. On 20 July, Fraunhofer ILT showcased a combined extreme‑high‑speed laser deposition and roller burnishing process that coats and smooths metal parts in a single step, adds PFAS‑free polymer layers using residual heat, and improves wear, corrosion and fatigue resistance. The institute also demonstrated a fluorescence‑laser scanning system for pressure die‑casting tools that maps release‑agent distribution in real time, helping operators optimise coating and bonding processes.

A few days later, on 16 July, Fraunhofer ILT renewed its strategic partnership with South Korea’s Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM). The memorandum of understanding expands joint research on laser‑based manufacturing for sustainable industry, covering electric‑vehicle components, battery production, fuel‑cell bipolar plates, laser processing of hairpin parts, de‑commissioning of nuclear facilities, small modular reactors, hydrogen and renewable‑energy systems, and further development of PFAS‑free functional coatings. The cooperation also deepens scientist‑exchange programmes, strengthening Germany‑South Korea collaboration in advanced manufacturing.
