The Freedom Caucus experienced significant setbacks during the August primary elections, particularly in Wyoming. In the Wyoming House, the group’s influence is expected to shrink from approximately 35 votes to roughly 10 members following the defeat of 13 incumbents. Additionally, four caucus-aligned members lost bids for the state Senate, including House Speaker Chip Neiman. 

Reports indicate that these losses in Wyoming were driven by organized efforts from liberal donors, advocacy groups, and corporate interests, such as the Wyoming Donor Alliance, which supported left-leaning Republican candidates to shift the state’s political direction. Chip Neiman characterized these efforts as an “organized machine” utilizing significant spending and media connections. 

Following the November 3 election, the group’s reduction in power has been further linked to the ‘Checkgate’ controversy involving Constitution Party gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Bextel. During a budget session, Bextel distributed $1,500 checks to several lawmakers aligned with the Freedom Caucus on the House floor. While a House committee concluded the action did not constitute bribery, it described the incident as ‘undesirable and must never occur again.’ The matter remains under investigation by the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office.

The decline in influence appears to extend beyond Wyoming. Similar defeats for caucus-aligned candidates were reported in Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee, suggesting a broader trend of waning influence for the group among GOP voters.
