French Ecological Transition Minister Monique Barbut initially threatened to resign in July 2026 to protest an emergency agricultural law. The law permits the reintroduction of two pesticides, acetamiprid and flupyradifurone, for specific crops, a move Barbut argued violated the precaution principle.

Despite her initial intent to step down, Barbut confirmed in August that she would remain in office after receiving guarantees regarding her policy priorities, including forestry, environmental health, and climate change adaptation. 

Following this decision, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu tasked Barbut with developing new measures to accelerate the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan by October. Barbut is also advocating for stricter regulations on cadmium levels in phosphate fertilizers, proposing a target of 20 mg/kg by 2030.
